CISSYLIA, VP BRANDS MARKETING GOJEK


We are a big fan of Cissy's style ever since we discovered her on Instagram. Little did we know that behind the square images showcasing her style, Cissy heads the Brands Marketing team as Vice President of what we deem as Indonesia's most successful startup company — Gojek Indonesia. Gojek Indonesia is one of the most successful startup company in Asia, not only in its innovative solutions but also in how it runs as a social business. In this conversation, we learn about the Advertising and Marketing industry through Cissy's role as a Vice President for Brands Marketing. Stylish, smart, inspirational and beautiful is only ones of the many adjectives we have to describe her.

START SOMEWHERE
I first started my career in a digital agency and worked in the advertising industry for 4 years. I graduated with a degree in Communication and took that degree somewhere it was useful. Most times, you really just needed to start somewhere to really find what you want. It took me 4 years before I realized that I wanted to move on to another role in my career. My current role continues to be within the creative industry but with a big touch of marketing role. We help to continue to deepen the Gojek brand through various ways, be it advertising or customer experience. Branding is a big aspect of marketing, and we work very closely together within the Marketing team to present to you the Gojek brand.

DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR WHAT YOU WANT
I joined Gojek after accidentally bumping into my husband's friend. I told him that I really wanted to work in Gojek — because it was an unconventional company and at that point of time, it was a company that gave back to the society. No other companies are like Gojek and it seemed just like the type of place I could learn a lot.

BE ADAPTABLE AND FLEXIBLE
I'm not going to lie but working in the agency and startup world is tough. Aside from your knowledge in your field of expertise, you really have to be a jack of all trades. You need to know a bit of everything — like marketing, technology, design, analytics. Everything changes very quickly in the startup world, so you need to be actively learning about everything and be receptive to new ideas.

ALWAYS BE CURIOUS
Stay alert, stay hungry and always be curious. I learn that wanting to learn is so important and having the can-do attitude is key to surviving the advertising and marketing industry. Be it the agency life, or the startup life — find yourself a mentor, take on new challenges and never say "I can't do it!".
